Sjef Verbeek, Ph.D, has extensive experience in the generation and phenotypic analysis of genetically modified mice in a wide range of medical areas, cancer, diabetes, neurological disorders and immunology. In immunology he gained an unique position by generating a complete set of all combinations of FcgR deficient mice. In collaboration with outstanding laboratories in the field in Japan, the US and Europe the role of FcgR in the effector pathways of IgG have been studies in disease models of arthritis, nephritis, vasculitis, EAE, hemolytic anemia, prion disease and in bacterial infections. In these mouse models the specific contribution of the different FcgR and complement in downstream effector pathways of the immune response could be defined. Moreover, a modulating role of FcgR in the immune response was identified. FcgR can effectively facilitate antigen presentation by professional antigen presenting cells.

Mohamed R. Daha, Ph.D, has extensive research experience in immunology of renal disease, autoimmunity and basic research in the areas of humoral and cellular immunology in relation to inflammation and chronic transplant rejection. His group has contributed to major developments in the field of complement and autoimmune renal diseases. Next to clinical/nephrological research his focus is also in renal disease in experimental models of animal disease. These studies serve to analyse the mechanisms underlying the development and course of glomerular and interstitial inflammation in the kidney. The active contribution of renal epithelial in the immune and inflammatory response has been demonstrated.
